Kristine McCarren

Kristine McCarren is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Pediatric Survival Swim Instructor.  She teaches infants and children as young as 6 months old the skills they need to save themselves if they were to get to the water alone.  Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1-4 years old.  Upon searching for a children's book to supplement her survival lessons and teach children to respect the water, Kristine was unable to find a book that did not include flotation devices, which give children a false sense of security  - that is, they make children believe they can swim, when in reality, they would not have access to air without the flotation device.  On the other hand, most of the books encouraged a "jump right in" mentality to the water, which is a dangerous way for children to see the most deadly surface on earth.  Kristine's mission in writing Violet Finds Her Float was to introduce water safety in a way that children learned to respect and learn skills to navigate the water before being able to enjoy it.
